BORN INTO IT

I’ve been an outdoors guy my whole life. You could say that I was born into it. My dad was a Scout Master and when he wasn’t with the Boy Scouts, he would be taking us on adventures and family weekend getaways.

I’ve always enjoyed being outside whenever possible and my childhood growing up on a small farm was one of the happiest times of my life. As a boy I progressed through Cubs, then Scouts and soaked up everything I could from camping to hiking, canoeing, abseiling, you name it.

ADVENTURE, TRAVEL & KIDS

I was born and raised in Australia and in my mid-20s moved to the UK to explore the outdoors in Europe.

When I started a family, adventures naturally slowed down but I still tried to get out there often. Those years with young kids are tough in so many ways.

After the European Adventures chapter came to an end my family moved back to our homeland (Australia) and set up a new life on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Queensland and my three kids were now at an age when camping was more workable.

I remember those early trips where I would take just about everything we owned, or so it felt, to ensure we had an awesome experience and were comfortable.

We loved camping twice a year for a week at a time but it was hard work, especially for me as the chief packer, set up guy, cook, medic, etc. It would take me over a day to get everything ready and another day to unpack and clean everything.

BIRTH OF UNPLUG

So I took my camping checklist and analyzed everything. What did we actually need and what couldn’t justify being taken? Over time I refined this more and more. I couldn’t always find the products that I wanted and would get by with makeshift solutions. I was making progress but I knew it could be better.

How could I make this easier? How could I create systems and processes that really simplified everything and created efficiency whilst maintaining comfort? Could I take less and have a better overall experience?

That was the start of UNPLUG and my pursuit to help as many people as I could with what I believe is the best way forward.

From my experience and observations, people tend to take way more than they actually need and it's often a mismatch of numerous items bought over time. It can end up feeling like a yard sale.

TESTING TESTING TESTING.

I always take pride in what I do. If I’m going to do something I’ll give it my best shot. So when I started developing products I knew we had to do some serious testing to make sure they were as good as we had planned. So we took our prototypes on a 7 week tour of the Western United States to test them in all conditions, from Rocky Mountain snow to Death Valley heat. It was a mega road trip through 9 states and 14 National Parks. Sounds horrible right but someone had to do it. Maybe I was just looking for an excuse but we did also get a lot of insight into what works and what doesn’t, which helped us to refine our systems even further.
